Komedie er ikke noget at grine af for Oscarvinderne Sally Field og Tom Hanks, der står midt på scenen i kæmpesucceseen . Sally Field (Forrest Gump, Mrs. Doubtfire) spiller rollen som Lilah Krytsick, en mor til tre fra New Jersey, der desperat ønsker at slå igennem som komiker. Hele sit liv har hun fået at vide, at hun er sjov, og nu er der blevet vendt op og ned på hendes hjemmeliv, da hun tilbringer sine aftener på scenen i en af New Yorks komedieklubber, The Gas Station. Hanks (Cast Away, Saving Private Ryan) spiller Steven Gould, en selvoptaget Lenny Bruce type, der får al opmærksomheden på The Gas Station med sit ukuelige, naturlige komedietalent. De bliver tiltrukket af hinanden, og Steve hjælper den usikre Lilah med at forvandle sit nummer fra trivielt til fantastisk, mens hun hjælper ham med at få styr på hans forpinte tilværelse. Med Hanks og Fields kritikerroste præstationer er et fascinerende drama om komikernes barske verden.
